Peewee A Team Wins Kitchener Fallfest Tournament
The Peewee A team travelled to Kitchener this past weekend to attend the
Kitchener Fallfest Tournament and brought home another banner. After a less
than impressive round robin the girls pulled up their socks and won every game
that mattered, eventually capturing gold.
The girls opened the tournament with a 2-0 loss to
Waterloo, followed by two ties with Brantford (1-1) and Kitchener (0-0)
respectively. Those results put the team in second place in their group after
round robin play, sending them to a quarter-final game against the
Markham-Stouffville Stars on Saturday afternoon. The team managed to pull off a
3-2 win with the game winning goal being netted with only sixteen seconds
remaining in regulation play. Next up was a 7:00am semi-final game against the
Waterloo Ravens on Sunday morning. Once again the girls gave the spectators an
exciting (or should I say nerve-wracking) experience. The semi-final game was
knotted at a tie (1-1) at the end of regulation so overtime was needed and when
that didn’t solve anything a shootout took place. The Lightning eventually won
the shootout in round nine sending them to the finals later that day. For the
gold medal game, the team faced off against the Brantford Ice Cats. The girls
were determined to pull off one more win and they did not disappoint. They won
the final game 3-0 and earned the right to claim their gold medals and another
banner to bring home.
Congratulations to
all of the players and coaching staff for a successful weekend. Game MVPs
throughout the tournament went to Maya Robinson, Keilee Buchanan, Annie
MacKinnon, Kennedy Stauffer, Grace Vokes and Caelan MacDonald. Tournament MVP
went to Lauren Neil.
