2011/2012 Presidents Message
Saugeen Maitland Lightning would like to welcome all players, staff and parents to the 2011-2012 season. We are excited to be in our 15th year of existence and have many events to celebrate the occasion. We are fielding 5 teams again this year and the vision would to have 6 teams in the future adding a Peewee A team.
We are just into our season as I write this and we have already had a thrilling win in the championship game in the Windsor Tournament by the Midget AA. Our Midget A team lost a 1-0 game and took home silver at the same tournament. The Bantam A team took home bronze in Oakville.
I am honored to be part of the Executive and especially in this anniversary year. I would like to see our organization grow and continue to have success on the ice. SML has been gaining respect in the province and country over the last 15 years and we need to continually build upon this. Our Midget teams are heavily scouted by Colleges and Universities from Canada and the US and many of the players in SML have gone on to play at this level. Our teams continue to be rated in the top 10 across the country!
We have built an organization based upon hard work, fair play, respect for others and a love of the game. I cannot stress the amount of work that has been put into this organization from its founders to its coaches and staff to the executive and the commitment from players and parents. Our success would not be possible with these people!
Good luck, play hard and wear the Saugeen logo proudly! Let’s go Lightning!

MISSION
Saugeen Maitland Women's Hockey Association's mission is to provide hockey instruction and competition for females of all ages and to instill in the participants a love for the game of hockey and a respect for fair play and sportsmanship.
HISTORY
A Brief History of the Saugeen Maitland Womens Hockey Association
A Group of individuals got together in the summer of 1997 and decided to form an organization within the boundaries of the Western Ontario Athletic Association (W.O.A.A.), which covers most of mid-western Ontario. They had seen girls hockey teams come and go over the years. They found that because of the small size of the populations of most of the communities, there wasn't any single centre that could consistently host higher level girls hockey teams.
Their solution to the problem was to form an agreement with W.O.A.A. Girls Hockey that would allow players that wished to play at a higher level join the Saugeen Maitland Girls teams from their centres within the W.O.A.A.
The name Saugeen Maitland was chosen because the majority of the towns and villages of the W.O.A.A. are in the watersheds of those two rivers. The group felt that would be an appropriate name to represent the area.
A majority of our home games and practices are based at the Howick arena. A number of our weekly practices are in Belmore, Teeswater or Lucknow. We use Ayton, Paisley and Wiarton arenas at times as well. Saugeen Maitland teams generally practice one to two times per week and will play somewhere between 55 and 80 games in a season which includes play-offs and tournaments.
