Saugeen Maitland Lightning Tryout Process
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning Women's Hockey Organization will ice the following teams for 2020-2021 - Midget AA, Midget A, Bantam AA, Bantam A, Peewee AA,  Atom A, Intermediate A and Senior A. 

Tryouts will begin after Provincials per OWHA guidelines.  Players that try out are guaranteed the first 2 scheduled tryouts for each age category. Exhibition games during the tryouts will be scheduled and players that have not been released will play at the discretion of the Coach and be part of the try out process. Players not selected to the team will be notified by the try out page on the team web site. Players not selected to a AA team are invited to try out for an A team at no additional cost.  Within 1 week of team selection, each Head Coach shall provide a roster to the Saugeen Maitland Executive Committee.

General Information:

  • Skills development sessions for players and goalies will be held throughout the season.
  • Practices are held 2 times per week for each team.
  • Teams will have pre-season practices and exhibition games in September.
  • Many of our teams enter a pre-season tournament.
  • Regular Season starts the first week of October. In past years, our teams competed against Bluewater (Strathroy), London, Kitchener, Waterloo, Cambridge, Waterloo, Windsor, Chatham, Sarnia and Stratford.
  • Our teams usually enter 5 tournaments, and if successful, compete in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League year-end tournament, Provincials tournament and/or Nationals tournament.
  • Saugeen Maitland will be competing in the Lower Lakes Female Hockey League. There are no gate fee admissions charged for games.
  • A Mandatory Parent/Player Meeting will be held in May immediately following tryouts. This meeting is for initial team info, player/parent signatures and uniform fittings.

Although Saugeen Maitland Women’s Hockey Association (SMWHA) has its own registration process, SMWHA adheres to all Lower Lakes Female Hockey League (LLFHL) and Ontario Women’s Hockey Association (OWHA) rules and regulations regarding player registration and eligibility.


  1. Players must meet SMWHA eligibility requirements as mandated by the OWHA and LLFHL.
  2. Players must participate in the SMWHA tryout process.  Players not currently registered with Saugeen Maitland must submit a signed permission to skate form.  Tryouts occur in April immediately following Provincials.  When needed, additional tryouts may occur in August and/or September.
  3. Successful players in the SMWHA tryout process will receive a Player Acceptance Letter.
  4. Players must submit appropriate player releases from their hometown minor hockey association.
  5. Players and their parents/guardians must sign a Code of Conduct.
  6. Players must pay a registration fee as determined annually by the SMWHA Committee.
  7. Players must submit partial payments of the registration fee in accordance to policy.
  8. Players may participate in the SMWHA fundraising program to fund in part or whole the registration fee.
