Tough O.T. Loss For Lightning At Silver Stick
Submitted by Rob Davidson
The Saugeen Maitland Midget Lightning AA’s rattled off 4 straight wins prior to losing a semi-final game in the 4th overtime period against the league rival Bluewater Hawks in the Sarnia Silver Stick tourney this past weekend.   The Lightning went 3-0 in round robin play with a 3-2 win against Waterloo, a 4-1 victory over Etobicoke and edging Kingston 3-1.

In the quarter final match versus the Sault Ste. Marie Wildcats, the Bolts had to comeback from a 2-0 deficit to eventually win 3-2 to advance to the semi’s against Bluewater.

In the semi-final, with Bluewater winning 1-0, 12 seconds left and the Lightning goalie pulled, 3rd-year veteran, Laken Smith was able to tuck in the game tying goal with 4 ticks left on the clock to send the game into O.T.

The following 4 periods of overtime saw both teams with numerous scoring chances but both goaltenders kept the nets empty.  It was Bluewater’s Erinn Noseworthy who scored the game winner with 4 seconds left in the 4th overtime period to advance the Hawks to the Finals.

Scoring during the Silver Stick were Marcie Landman (3), Brooklyn Irwin (3), Hannah Davidson (2), Laura Irwin (2), Laken Smith, Gina Murray, Sara Gossell, Georgia Ottewell.  Picking up assists on the weekend were Dollee Meigs (3), Landman (3), Gossell (3), L. Smith (2), Brittany Butcher (2), Kelly Garrow (2), B. Irwin, L. Irwin, Murray, Ashley Reid and Nicole Marriage.

Picking up a pair of wins each in net were goaltenders Stephanie Sluys and Bantam AA call up, Shea Tiley.

Unfortunately, the Lightning lost the services of steady rookie defenceman, Abby McGavin when she suffered a serious injury early in the tournament.  Her teammates miss Abby and wish her a speedy recovery.
