The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
Midget AA were edged 4-3 by the Sarnia Sting in the semi-final match of the
Guelph Thunderstorm tournament this past weekend. The Lightning went
undefeated in round robin play including
a 3-0 win versus Haldimand, a 2-2 tie versus North Halton and a 5-1 victory versus Guelph. In the semi-final match, the league rival Sarnia Sting came out with a fast skating, tight checking game plan and jumped to an early lead and never looked back. Although the Lightning outshot the Sting 30 - 16 they couldn’t get the equalizer late in the game ending the Lightning’s 10-game unbeaten streak.
The line of Stacie Vink, Kelly Gribbons and Hailey Herman had a standout weekend picking up a total of 14 points in the four games. Scoring for the Lightning were Laura Irwin (4), Stacie Vink (3), Dolle Meigs (2), Kaitlyn Soers, Hailey Herman, Kelly Garrow and Kelly Gribbons. Assists were awarded to Herman (4), Vink (3), Sara Gossell (2), Abbey Gibson (2), Soers (2), Garrow (2), Gribbons (2), Irwin, Hannah Davidson and Georgia Ottewell.
