Bantam AA Quarter-Finalists at Silver Stick
A promising start to the weekend turned to disappointment as the Saugeen Maitland Bantam AA Lightning lost in overtime in the quarter-finals of the International Silver Stick tournament in Aurora this past weekend

The Bolts had come back from being down 2-0 early to the Stoney Creek Sabres to tie the game late in the 3rd period and send it to the extra period. Neve VanPelt started the come-back late in the second frame, burying a rebound off a shot from Avery Reeves. Ashlee Lawrence tied the game with about 3 minutes to play with Maddie Duncan and Hannah Herman assisting. The Lightning had chances to score the winner and prevent overtime, but were foiled by the Sabres’ goaltender. Stoney Creek scored early in the overtime period for the 3-2 win to send the Lightning home disappointed.

The Lightning qualified for the quarter-finals with wins over the three other teams in their pool: defeating the Ottawa Senators 4-0, the Willowdale Red Wings 6-0 and the Vaughn Flames 2-1. Jessica Dales scored two goals in the Friday afternoon game versus the Senators, while Reeves and Duncan added singles. Assisting in the Ottawa game were Miranda Lantz (2), Jamie Simpson, Lexi Smith, Lawrence and VanPelt. A balanced scoring attack was on the menu for the Lightning in the Willowdale game with 6 different players finding the back of the net in the 6-0 win. Cassidy Mason, Kaitlyn Eckert, Tori Terpstra, Reeves, Smith and Lawrence all scored with assists going to Ciara Lark, Nikki Zabel, Lantz, Duncan, VanPelt, Mason, Lawrence, Simpson, Eckert and Terpstra. Terpstra and Simpson both scored un-assisted in the 2-1 win over Vaughn. Goaltending was strong all weekend with Morgan Baker and Rebecca Ropp each earning a shutout in the first two games against Ottawa and Willowdale. Next weekend, the Bolts will continue their Lower Lakes play-off round against Cambridge. For current schedule and results go to www.saugeenmaitlandlightning.com.
