PeeWee Lightning play Oakville to a tie at Provincials
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning PeeWee AA team competed at Provincials from April 4-7, and came up just 1 point short of moving to Quarter Finals.
The girls started the tournament with a tie against the Barrie Sharks, ending game 1 with a score of 2 -2. This was a dissappointing tie for the team, as they seemed to take a bit to get their travel legs working after the long drive to Ottawa. Scoring both goals for SML was Jaymee Nolan, who hit the marker to tie the game at 1 late in the 2nd period, assisted by Alyssa Andrews and Jennelle Smeltzer, and the second unassisted marker to go ahead at the start of the 3rd. Barrie tied it up with 6 minutes left and niether team could break the tie.
Game 2 saw the Lightning square up with the Whitby Wolves, and lose a heartbreaking match by a score of 1 -0. Our PeeWee girls played hard, and in a controversial play, had a goal disallowed which would have tied the game late in the 3rd period.
The disappointed Pee Wee's fought back hard against league rival Oakville Hornets in game 3, and with lots of heart and enthusiasm, played a very solid game. Everyone on the team from the goaltender out, played with their hearts on their sleeves, and stunned the Oakville team, who finished 2nd in our regular season play, and won silver at the LLFHL Championship weekend, with a tie with just 1:20 left in the 3rd on a goal by Jennelle Smeltzer. Assist went to Madison Beishuizen.
This would be the girls last game together, and what a way to end it! This group of girls came together in the fall and improved tremendously in their skill level, being the first Saugeen Maitland PeeWee AA team in Saugeen Maitland history to make the playoffs! A great accomplishment! They finished with their heads high, and a sense of pride in wearing the SML logo, representing our area in the top level of hockey available to girls in Canada.
