Midget A Team Strong in Belleville written by Brad Humphrey
The SML Midget A team were tough competition for the competition at the Belleville tournament that started Jan 9th to Jan 11th.   Game 1 … was Friday at high noon, SML took on West Northumberland Wild. Travel legs were obvious in the first period, but the team loosened up and brought their game on, with a 3-1 win. Goal scorers for SML were M Murray, R Cook and R Montgomery with assists to A Murray, M Murray, K Hewitt and J Gaynor. Player of the game was Winger Aleya Murray with goal, lots of hard work and determination.

Game 2  … Friday night had SML against the Kingston Ice Wolves. SML came out strong with 3 first period goals all within 6 minutes. The second and third were all SML as the players were ready to play some good hockey. One goal in the second and one in the third rounded out the scoring. Goal scorers were R Montgomery with 2, E Eckenswiller, A Murray and M Murray all with one each. Assists went to K Eckert-2, A Murray, E Eckenswiller-2, C Wilkens-2, R Cook, K Hewitt. K McCabe. Player of the game was centre Robin Montgomery with a strong offensive performance.
 
Game 3 … had SML against the hometown Belleville Bearcats. This was a good fast game with SML outshooting the Bearcats 39-14. Belleville goalie was strong in net making some great stops. SML took control of the game in the third with two quick goals to slow down the Bearcats and a 2-0 win. Goals by R Montgomery and A Murray sealed the deal. Assists went to R Cook, K McCabe, T Humphrey and C Wilkens. Defenseman Taylor Humphrey was the player of the game with some nice defensive plays and break outs from her teams end.
 
Game 4 … was against Cornwall Typhoons. SML was on a roll and playing well. Final score was 7-1 for SML. The girls were in complete control of this game and dominated at both ends of the ice. Goals by E Eckensweiller-2, J Dales -2, A Murray-2, M Murray -1 and assists to E Eckensweiller-2, A Murray-2, K McCabe-2, T Humphrey, A Aitkins, K Hewitt, J Dales. Player of the game was tough to call as there were many girls with outstanding efforts… Centre E Eckenswiller was named player of the game with a great effort and some nice slick stick work.
 
Game 5 … saw the home town Belleville Bearcats back as the final contenders. The Bearcat goalie picked up were she left off making some big saves at the start of the game. Belleville wasn’t not there too loose and J Gaynor was impressive in the SML net making some difficult saves to keep the score at 0-0. The shots on goal were tied up when K Hewitt broke the tie with a nice goal with some hard work around the net and the assist to R Cook. As the game went into the third, J Gaynor was sharp stopping some good chances by Belleville to give her team a chance to build on their lead. Mid point in the third, R Cook snapped top shelf for her teams second goal and unassisted.  A Murray finished off the game with an empty net goal to secure the win. Player of the game was defenseman K McCabe with a strong game on the offensive blue line and smart plays in the open ice.
 
The girls were there to win and played some good hockey to be the Champs of the tournament … the team is showing dedication and spirit to their team. Great job girls and keep it rolling through the end of the year and into the playoffs.
