Atom A’s Win the Guelph Winter Classic
The Atom A’s finished the weekend champions at the Guelph Winter Classic.

The team began their weekend against the tournament host Guelph Gryphons.  The first game of the weekend was a tough one for the Lightning which resulted in a 2-1 loss.   The Atoms A’s pulled together to play as a team over the next 4 games and outscored their opponents 25-1, earning the right to play in the tournament finals against the Gryphons one more time for the tournament championship.

The final game was tight with both teams getting their chances. After 3 full periods hockey, a five minute 4 on 4 overtime, and a five minute 3 on 3 overtime, the game ended in a 0-0 tie.  The Game went to a shootout.  Myah Tupling protected the Lightning net by stopping 3 of 3 Guelph shooters.  The lone shootout goal by Danielle Brown was enough to win the tournament!

Not only did the team win the tournament and finish with a 5-1 record, they also took 2 events in the tournament’s skills competition.  The Lightning won the breakaway challenge, and the relay race team skated 4 laps around the rink to win with an unofficial time of 56.82 seconds.  The Lightning goaltending also held down a net in the breakaway contest aswell.

The girls pulled together and played well as a team to earn another tournament championship, and make this a very successful weekend for a great bunch of athletes!
