The family
day weekend of February 14-16 the Saugeen Midget AA travelled to Parry Sound
for a series of exhibition games. Along
with the Lightning were teams from Sudbury, Whitby, Oakville, Stoney Creek and
Scanlon Hockey Academy from Barrie. All games were very close which made for
some exciting hockey. The Saugeen ladies
had a record of 2 wins, 1 loss and 2 ties.
On Friday the Bolts beat Stoney Creek 2-1 and tied Whitby at 0. Saturday morning they won 2-1 against Scanlon and tied Sudbury 3-3. Sunday morning they faced Oakville and lost 2-0. It was a great tune up with playoffs looming. Goaltenders Morgan Baker and Rebecca Ropp as well as their defencemen Kailyn Soers, Ciara Lark, Nikki Zabel, Jamie Simpson, Jordyn Sholdice and Maddie Duncan had a solid weekend defending their end of the ice as well as chipping in on the offense. Not to be outdone the forward crew of, Neve VanPelt, Ashlee Lawrence, Cassidy Colhoun, Avery Reeves, Tori Terpstra, Lexi Smith, Kelsey Dixon, Dawn Pletsch and Sarah Biesenthal all showed a lot of hustle and grit at both ends of the ice.
With the Parry Sound trip behind them, this past weekend saw the Lady Lightning start their second round of playoffs against London 611 (they finished first in their division and had a first round bye). Saturday afternoon London made the trip up highway 4 to Teeswater. Saugeen would pick up that all important first game win 2-1. Ropp was solid between the pipes and she even picked up an assist on the game winning goal scored by Dixon with another helper from Pletsch. The first goal was scored by Colhoun from Lawrence and VanPelt. Game one was in the books. Game 2 was the very next day back in London and it was a tightly contested game with the Saugeen girls picking up a 1-0 victory and winning the series 2 straight. Baker picked up the shutout and Terpstra would get the only goal from Mel Nolan and Smith. With this series win the Bolts are now waiting for the winner of Bluewater and Sarnia for the Lower Lakes West Division final.
