Midget A, 2010-2011 (Saugeen Maitland Lightning)

The Saugeen Maitland Midget A's showed that they can play with the best in the province after taking first place in round robin play on the weekend at the International Silverstick in Sarnia.  The round robin draw faced them against three Lower Lakes Female Hockey League regular season champions, including the Belmont Blazers, who were also the Ontario Womens Hockey Association provincial champions in 2010, the Scarborough Sharks and the Barrie Sharks, who also finished up with top standing in their 6 and 8 team divisions respectively.     

The Saugeen Maitland Lightning Midget A’s brought home silver medals from the Whitby Tournament of Heroes on the weekend, falling to the Sarnia Sting with a 2-1 loss in the final contest.  The Sting scored first, with the Lightning answering on a power play goal late in the second period.  After a scoreless third period, the match was settled shortly before the end of the four-on-four overtime, when a Sarnia player knocked in the deciding goal.   

Submitted by Kevin Armstrong.   On Nov. 13, Sponser Day for the Saugeen Maitland Hockey Organization saw our Midget A team take on the former Prov. Champs and #1 in our division the Belmont Blazers. To no one's surprise it was a very heated battle after facing them on a double header the previous weekend. The SM Midget A's opened up the scoring within the 1st minute of play. The Blazers fought back with a quick goal. During the 2nd period the Lightning's Penalty Kill remained perfect after the girls showed a bit too much "spirit " causing some undisciplined penalties.  I

Team staff has now been finalized.  Additional exhibition games will be added to our September schedule shortly.  Keep an eye on the website!

A big thank-you to the Armstrong's for hosting our July summer party! Although the weather did not co-operate, it was a great opportunity to meet each other, and for Coach Kevin to introduce his coaching philosophy and the dry land training program. Looking forward, we are excited to hit the ice beginning with conditioning skates starting in just 9 days, Fall tryouts at the end of the month, followed by our first tournament on Sept 10-12 in North York.  Exhibition games will be added to our September schedule shortly.  Keep an eye on the website and your email for further updates!
