Don Bushell Memorial Scholarship

Don_Bushell-web.jpgThe Don Bushell Memorial Scholarship was created to commemorate and honour his service to the Saugeen Maitland Lightning Women's Hockey Association. Don was a very athletic person, who loved playing basketball and broomball. At the young age of 24, he became a quadriplegic as a result of a motor vehicle accident. Don became active in sports once again when his children joined teams in Lucknow. As a parent, he assisted in the management of his children’s teams, and went on to support the men’s Senior A hockey team and Lucknow Minor Sports.

Don became involved with Saugeen Maitland in 2005 when his daughter joined the Bantam A team. For the next couple of years, he organized accommodations and map packages for her team, before joining the executive as the ice scheduler. He remained with the organization until his sudden death in May 2013.

Along with his involvement in sports, he was an active member with numerous health related organizations. Don started as a speaker with the PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) Program that worked with students to educate them on potential outcomes of risky behaviors. He was also involved with the District Health Council as a member at large for several years, and later joined Home and Community Support services of Grey Bruce. Additionally, Don was associated with the Bruce County Accessibility Committee due to his disability. At the time of his death he was Past Chair for the South Bruce Grey Health Center and was approaching the end of his twelve year term.
