PeeWee's Split Weekend & Celebrate Holidays
The Saugeen Maitland PeeWee's split their weekend games on Dec 15 and 16th, losing to a strong and disciplined London team, and beating rival team, the Barrie Sharks.
On Saturday, the team put on what was probably the best 2 periods of hockey so far this year, keeping pace with a strong and skilled London Devilette team. The Lightning started off the scoring at the 9 minute mark of the first period, Jaymee Nolan taking the shot, on a pass from Jennelle Smeltzer. Julia Beaven would stand on her head and make a few seemingly impossible saves to end the period up 1-0.
London would tie it up at 9:06 of the 2nd, and it would remain a 1-1 tie throughout the rest of the 2nd. The action was fast and furious, and netminder Beaven continued to play a very solid game, blocking shots from some very strong Devilettes. The Lightning had a great game going into the flood, and London coaches were less than impressed to be ending the 2nd period with a tie.
London came out strong in the 3rd, using their size and speed to finally break through with a string of 4 goals, finishing the game up 5-1. The final score certainly does not indicate the strong game played by the Lightning girls.
After the game, the team gathered with their families in the hall upstairs to celebrate the Christmas season and to show their understanding of the true meaning of Christmas. A pot luck meal was enjoyed by all, and the team presented the coaching staff with certificates for donations made to their favourite charities. In all, donations were made to the Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Grey-Bruce, the Heart and Stroke Society of Grey-Bruce, Right to Play Canada, and Wes For Youth Online. Our Pee Wee girls proudly showed their coaches that they truly get what Christmas is all about! They also provided entertainment to all the parents with a lighthearted rendition of "The 12 Days of Hockey". Afterward, the team all travelled to Owen Sound and enjoyed watching the Owen Sound Attack take on the Brampton Battalion at the Bayshore, finishing off the night with a team sleepover. Thanks to all who helped make this happen, as the team building was phenomenal!
On Sunday, the team was back in action at the Howick rink, taking on the ever tough to beat Barrie Sharks. We have come up cold against this team, losing 2 of 3 previous matches against them, so were out to show them our stuff! Jennelle Smeltzer started off the scoring at 11:46 of the 1st, assists going to Natalie Gallagher, and Hana Solinger. Megan Wilton would get her 1st of 2 with just 1:43 left in the period, unassisted. Lightning would finish the first up 2-0.
Action was back and forth in the second, but niether team could get one past the opposing goalie, as they both played strong.
Megan Wilton would get her 2nd at 5:51 of the 3rd, assisted by Kelsey Mighton, and then Barrie would finally get one past Julia Beaven. But it was too little too late for the Sharks as they pulled their goalie to try to even the score. A great "D to D" pass by Leah Herrfort, and the following shot by Kara Colhoun would ice the game with a 4-1 win!
