Lightning back in Action at Scarborough Sharks Tournament
Submitted by Adam Nolan. As the girls finished off their Christmas break, they travelled to Scarborough to compete in the Ice Trials tournament.
In the first round robin game, the Lightning played the the Sudbury Lady Wolves, and the Lightning struck first with Jennelle Smeltzer starting things off on a pass from Jaymee Nolan. The second period saw the Lady Wolves come back and put one by net minder Julia Beaven to tie the score at 1, but this wouldn't keep the Lightning from playing hard to go ahead. Megan Wilton would take a shot and sneak one by the Sudbury goalie, to go ahead 2-1. The PeeWee girls would keep the pressure on, and Hana Solinger, with the assist going to Madison Beishuizen, would get the empty net goal to finish the game with a 3-1 win.
Game 2 saw the team take on the Kingston Ice Wolves. It was a hard fought battle in the first, and the two teams ended the period with no scoring. At the mid point of the 2nd, the Lightning drew first blood with an unassisted goal by Jaymee Nolan, but within minutes, the Kingston squad would tie things up at 1. The 3rd period saw back and forth action, but a tough bounce saw Kingston score and take the lead, eventually winning the game 2-1.
Our third game pitted us against the St. Catharines Chaos, the 4th place team in our league. The girls played with desire and heart, and kept them scoreless through 1 and 1/2 periods, but the Chaos proved to be strong and scored 4 unanswered goals to win the game 4-0 and guarantee themselves a spot in the finals.
In our final round robin game, we were up against the Syracuse Nationals, The Lightning was all over the rival Nats in the first and second, but just couldn't get the puck past the Syracuse netminder. It was the 3rd period before either team would score, with Syracuse striking first on Beaven to take the lead. As play continued, Kara Colhoun would score to even things up, with assists to Jaymee Nolan and Mattie Shipp. With the game tied, Nolan would put the Lightning up by 1, unassisted. With the pressure still on, Hana Solinger would seal the deal, on a pass from Laura White. ending the game with a 3-1 victory.
As the Lightning finished the round robin, it all came down to waiting for the results of the Syracuse/Kingston game, as the team needed Syracuse to defeat Kingston in the final game of the round robin play, in order to move on. It was a close game, and looked like Syracuse would take it, however a late goal by Kingston to tie the game would bump us out of contention.
The PeeWee Lightning will be back in action this weekend, taking on the Barrie Sharks in Barrie on Jan 12 at 5pm, and back at home on Sunday in Howick vs North York Storm for a 12pm game. Come on out and cheer on your Saugeen Maitland PeeWee Lightning!
