PeeWee's finish regular season with series of 2's
The PeeWee Lightning finished off their regular season with 2 wins, 2 ties and 2 losses, putting them in 8th spot at the end of the season. This means they will play 1st place London in the 1st round of playoffs.
On Jan 12, the Lightning travelled to Barrie to take on the Sharks, coming away with a 4 - 1 win! 1st period action saw Kelsey Mighton score on a pass from Jennelle Smeltzer and Jamey Cunningham. Action in the second was back and forth, with no scoring by either team. Jaymee Nolan got things started in the 3rd, unassisted, and was followed by Hana Solinger with a goal, before Barrie scored, keeping it close at 3 - 1. Laura White would finish things off with Jaymee Nolan and Kara Colhoun getting the assists, ending the game with a 4 - 1 score.
The next day, the PeeWee's took on the North York Storm in Howick. The much improved Storm have had a rough season, but continue to play with discipline and love for the game. Goal scorers for the Lightning in a 5 - 0 win were Megan Wilton, Jaymee Nolan, Emma Swift, and Jennelle Smeltzer with 2. Adding assists were Jaymee Nolan, Alyssa Andrews, Mattie Shipp, and Kelsey Mighton.
The next 2 games were played against the Waterloo Ravens. These two teams are neck and neck in the standings, and both games could make a difference in the final standings for the playoff race. However, neither team would move in the rankings, as both games ended in ties. 0 - 0 on Jan 19, and 2 - 2 on Jan 24. Scoring goals for the PeeWee's were Smeltzer and Leah Herrfort, with assists going to Kara Colhoun and Jaymee Nolan.
The final weekend of the season saw the Lightning take on the Stoney Creek Sabres. We had beat them in our first meeting of the year, and they had a chip on their shoulders! The Lightning fought hard and had opportunities, but were shut out by the Sabres goalie, losing 3 - 0. The Lightning then faced the London Devilettes, and after being re-scheduled 2 times due to "Snowmaggedon 2013", finally made a Tuesday night trip to the Forest City to complete the game. With 1st place on the line for the talented London team, they wanted this win badly. Lightning goalie Julia Beaven had other plans. She stood tall and blocked the powerful Devilettes shots, turning away chance after chance. Our girls played hard, and gave it their all, but eventually London pulled ahead by a goal, before Jennelle Smeltzer would tie the game at 1 at the mid point of the 2nd period. Assists going to Kelsey Mighton, and Natalie Gallagher. London would sneak another one to finish off the 2nd, and get one more in the 3rd to clinch 1st place in the Western Division of LLFHL. A stellar performance by Julia Beaven in the pipes against a very strong and talented London squad.
This confirmed the standings, and the SML PeeWee's will face London in a 2 out of 3 series for the 1st round of the Playoffs. Game 1 had to be moved due to weather (again). The series will begin on Saturday, Feb 16 at 2pm in Teeswater, and move to London Ice Park for 11 am Sunday, Feb 17th. Game 3 (if needed) will be at 4pm at Nichols Arena, in London. Come on out to Teeswater the Saturday to cheer on your PeeWee Lightning!!!
