Midget A Team - Provincial Champions!!
Submitted By Sue Davey on Monday, April 14, 2014
Congratulations to the Saugeen Maitland Midget A Team who won GOLD at the 2014 OWHA Provincial Championships held this past weekend.

Our team met for the first time in a dressing room in Listowel, April 26th, 2013 and Coach Bill talked about the journey ahead and what he hoped would be for the group of young ladies that were the Saugeen Maitland Midget A’s.

The off-ice growth in this team can best be described by what happened during the break between the 3rd and 4th overtime period in our semi final game on Sunday, where the ladies were huddled with their coach singing out loud and proud the song “Don’t Stop Believing”.

The off-ice success translated to on-ice success this year with five tournament victories, a silver medal in the Lower Lakes Championship, and cumulated this past weekend with a Provincial Gold Medal ! The Provincial weekend started with pool play wins over Kitchener and Leaside and a tie against Markham. Those results advanced us to a quarterfinal game against the ladies from Clearview, a team much like ours. It was, as expected, a spirited tight checking game which we ultimately prevailed by a score of 1-0 setting up a semi final game on Sunday versus Walkerton. This game had more emotion than any other game this year, and ultimately our ladies prevail 2-1 in the fourth overtime period. This set up a final against Oakville (who won their semi final game in the 6th overtime period ). Both teams still had gas in the tank, and put on a great final with our ladies coming out on top 2 to 1 to win the Provincial Gold Medal!

It was great season, and I would like to thank the parents, the staff and the ladies that made up the Saugeen Maitland Midget A team for making all the memories we have.

And finally, to pass along an email received from a parent of another team that we played; You have a wonderful group of girls and it was a privilege to play against such a skilled, upbeat and positive bunch of young women!

Congratulations Melissa, Ally, Cassidy, Becky, Ashley, Taylor, Vanessa, Hannah, Erin, Mikhayla, Abbi, Kaitlin, Hailey, Jessica S, and Jessica D on a great year!
