
Don Bushell Memorial Scholarship awarded to Hannah Herman
Saugeen Maitland announced the winner of the Don Bushell Memorial Scholarship to Hannah Herman. Due to the number of excellent candidates the committee decided to award a second scholarship and it was shared between Avery Reeves and Nicole Zabel.
Hannah received $500 and Avery and Nicole each will each receive $250.
Saugeen Maitland Lightning awards a $ 500 scholarship annually with this being our fourth year. Please read the following inserts about the three young women whom we are honored to call Saugeen Maitland Lightning team mates.
Hannah Herman is currently in her second year at Georgian College studying Early Childhood Education. Hannah made the Dean's list in her first year. Hannah has played throughout her hockey career for Saugeen Maitland Lightning starting in Peewee and is in her second year with the Intermediate A team. Hannah has won 3 Gold medals, a Silver and a Bronze medal in Provincials playing with Saugeen and is the most decorated player in Saugeen's 21 years.
Hannah is heavily involved in community activities working with children, referees and is a Trainer in minor hockey. She is a great ambassador for Saugeen Maitland.
Avery Reeves is currently in her second year at York University studying Health Sciences and Kinesiology (BSC). Avery started playing with Saugeen Maitland Peewee teams winning a Provincial medal and played for 4 more years with Saugeen before moving to the PW League with Barrie. Avery has played the last two years with the York University Varsity team.
Avery volunteers in schools and local community centers working with children. Avery has started a part time business called "Reeves Fitness Coaching" again demonstrating leadership and entrepreneurship while working with young athletes. Great job and we are honored to call Avery a Saugeen Maitland Alumni.
Nicole Zabel is currently in her second year at the University of Ontario Institute and Technology (UOIT) taking Biological Sciences. Nicole would like to take a 5th year taking Education and becoming a teacher.
Nicole started playing in Saugeen Maitland Lightning with the Peewee team were she quickly won Gold and Bronze medals with the Peewee teams. Nicole played with Saugeen until she moved to the PWL Cambridge team and has played for UOIT Varsity team for the past two seasons. Nicole spends hours working as a volunteer for her local community working with youth and volunteers with Grandview Hospital in Oshawa.
Great job and we are honored to call Nicole a Saugeen Maitland Alumni.
