In an exhilarating display of skill and determination, the Saugeen Maitland Lightning (SML) hockey team emerged victorious at the Sharkfest tournament, in Barrie, ON this weekend. The team's exceptional performance throughout the event showcased both talent and resilience.
The Lightning's journey to victory began with an impressive 4-0 record in pool play. Facing off against formidable U13 A teams such as the Flamborough Falcons, South Huron Sabres, Barrie Sharks, and Ottawa Ice, SML showcased their prowess on the ice, securing victories in each game.
The semifinal clash against the Ottawa Ice proved to be a challenging encounter for the Lightning. With both teams displaying a commendable level of skill, the game ended with a hard-fought 2-0 victory for SML, earning them a well-deserved spot in the tournament's final.
The final game against the Barrie Sharks was a true test of the Lightning's grit. Barrie came out strong in the first period, taking an early 1-0 lead. However, SML refused to be deterred and mounted a remarkable comeback in the last two periods of play. Through sheer determination and teamwork, they managed to level the score and ultimately secured a 3-1 victory, clinching the championship title.
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the Barrie Women's Hockey Association for organizing a fantastic tournament. Sharkfest 2023/24 provided an excellent platform for teams to showcase their skills and foster camaraderie among players.
