The Saugeen
Maitland Midget Lightning AA’s battled back to eliminate the Waterloo Ravens in
Lower Lakes League semi final action this weekend. On Friday, the
Lightning fell 4-3 to the home town Ravens after tying the opening game the
previous weekend. The win gave Waterloo a 3 points to 1 advantage going
into Sunday’s deciding match. In
the deciding game, it was the Lightning who came out flying
and jumped to a 1-0 lead on a nice shot from the slot by Laken Smith. The Lightning put the game away with a nifty deflection goal by Dollee Meigs on a shot from Captain, Gina Murray. The game ended 2-0 for the Bolts. With both teams sitting at 3 points each, they were required to play a sudden death, 5 minute extra period to decide who advances to the South West division final. In the O.T. it was strong forechecking by the line of Laken Smith, Laura Irwin and Dollee Meigs that gave the Lightning the chance to end the series and it was Laken Smith who was the hero when she banged home a rebound a minute into the extra period.
Leading the way on the scoresheet with five points was Laken Smith while Laura Irwin and Dollee Meigs had a 4 point weekend. Also picking up assists were Gina Murray (2), Georgia Ottewell and Brittany Butcher. Stephanie Sluys had the shut out in the deciding game.
The Lightning will now meet the Bluewater Hawks in the division final.
