Lightning Take Silver at Tournament of Heroes
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning Midget A’s brought
home silver medals from the Whitby Tournament of Heroes on the weekend, falling
to the Sarnia Sting with a 2-1 loss in the final contest. The Sting scored first, with the Lightning
answering on a power play goal late in the second period. After a scoreless third period, the match was
settled shortly before the end of the four-on-four overtime, when a Sarnia player knocked in
the deciding goal.
In round robin play, the Lightning downed the Nepean Wildcats 4-2 and the Burlington Barracudas 4-3, before falling short to Sarnia 6-1. In the quarter finals, Saugeen met a tough Hamilton Hawks team, turning them away 1-0. In the semis against a strong North Halton squad, a 2-2 tie at the end of regular play sent the game into overtime. With 14 seconds left to play, the Lightning struck to hurl the Twisters spinning back to North Halton.
The team has a record of 4-2-5 in regular season play. They return to the ice next Saturday for a double header against East Kent on home ice in Howick.
