First PWAA Tournament in Durham West
Composed by Aron VanPelt
Outstanding performance by the PWAA girls this weekend in Durham West!!
On friday the Saugeen Maitland PWAA girls travelled to Pickering for their first tournament in their new ranking of AA. Well, the girls should be proud of their performance over the weekend. On Friday afternoon we played Kingston and squeaked out a 1-0 win. In order to lock down 1st place in the division we needed a win against a strong Durham West team.
On Saturday morning the lightning came out with a little extra spark and took it to a strong Durham West team. Strong play from everyone made for an exciting 2-0 win. This win brought us to a Semi final game in which we drew the #1 ranked team in Ontario - the Clarington Flames.
The lightning came out of the gate strong and out shot them in the first period 11-2 but had trouble putting it past a strong Clarington goalie. At the end of the 1st period the teams were deadlocked at 1-1. Second period action saw our lightning team start running out of gas and Clarington capitalized to take a 2-1 lead. With tired and beat up bodies on the bench, the girls fought hard but couldn't muster up enough energy to make a comeback. Final score was 3-1 Clarington who eventually went on to win the tournament. Great tournament girls and we will see them in provincials!!!
