Silver in Oakville
Saugeen Maitland opened their season with a Silver medal in the Oakville Hornet tournament this past weekend. The Lightning lost 3-2 in the final game in the 16 team tournament. After falling behind 2-0 in the first 3 minutes the Lightning responded back and after 2 periods were trailing by a goal. Though out playing and out shooting Brampton the girls could not get the equalizer missing by inches in the last seconds.
Saugeen opened the tournament against Owen Sound and though out shooting and controlling the play fell 2-1 to start.
The Lighting then played Etobicoke and came out with a mission and completely controlled the game ending up with a 5-2 score. Needing a win or tie to move into the playoffs the Lightning tied Kanata 4-4 to move into the final 8.
Saturday night Saugeen played top cede Stoney Creek from pool C and after 3 periods the game was tied at 1. After 5 minutes of 4 on 4 the teams went into a 5 player shoot out. Rebecca Ropp stopped all 5 shooters and Taylor MacDonald scored a backhander on the last shot to get the Lightning into the final 4. A great team win and team builder moment.
Sunday morning Saugeen played an excellent game taking out Sarnia 2-0 to move onto the finals. Saugeen started the game out shooting the Sting 15-1 in the first period and continued to pressure the Sting throughout the balance.
Sunday final against Brampton started out with 2 quick goals leaving the Lightning in a hole to climb out of. Saugeen responded and got the game to within one but though outshooting and outplaying them could not find the net.
Congrats to Brampton on the gold.
Saugeen started the tournament with one D getting a concussion days prior and then lost another D on a major penalty with a 3 game suspension. Ally Spielmacher was drafted to Defense and played awesome at a position she does not regularly play. Great job!
"We are very proud of the team who had only played 2 games together and have 6 first year players and 8 second year players... For us to play 6 games this weekend and to out shoot each team and for most parts be in control we are happy with the results." Looking forward to the season start.
Excellent job girls!
