Saugeen hosted Sarnia Sting on Saturday and came away with a 2-1 victory. The win propelled Saugeen into a first place tie with Guelph. The lead was short lived as 24 hours later Saugeen limped away with a 3-0 loss Sunday to the hometown Waterloo team.
Saugeen remains a point back of first in the tight division with a game in hand.
Game 1: Saugeen came out flying against the Sting on Saturday with an early lead in the first. Mikhayla Bowes took a pass in the slot in traffic and showed great poise as she held the puck until the goalie moved and fired high blocker to stake the Lightning to the lead. Reagan Kaufman and Becky Bultz assisted on the play.
Mikhayla Bowes continued the scoring getting the eventual game winner with a low one timer to the stick side. Cassidy Mason got the assist with a great feed from the corner.
Saugeen slowed down their pace in the third and allowed Sarnia to cut the lead to one but held on for the win to take the overall lead in the division. Emma Bluhm was solid in net stopping all but one of the 18 shots she saw.
Mikhayla Bowes was voted MVP of the game winning the "Laura Award" with her two goals and strong play.
Game 2: Sunday Saugeen travelled to Waterloo with the winner claiming first place in the division. Saugeen gave up a goal on the first shot of the game and seemed lost on the big ice surface. The team was flat for all three periods with one of their worst games as a team this year. Waterloo scored twice more to cement the victory with a 3-0 final.
With 7 games left in the regular season Saugeen remains 1 point out of first with the opportunity to take the lead
