PeeWee Lightning Continue with Strong Season Start
Written by Adam Nolan. On October 27th, the Saugeen Maitland Lightning PeeWee AA's played their season home opener in Howick against the Mississauga Chiefs.
In this much awaited first home game, the girls did not disappoint. The first period saw the Lightning come out flying, controlling the puck and flocking the Mississauga goalie with shots. Although the girls out played and out shot the Chiefs, the scored remained a 0-0 tie going into the second.
As the second period rolled on, the Chiefs took it to the net and scored first, but this wasn't going to stop the Lightning, as they answered back with an unassisted goal by Jennelle Smeltzer. Hard work from Madison Beishuizen payed off as she put the puck in the back of the net, assisted by Smeltzer and Jamey Cunningham. The third saw the girls keep the pressure on and pocketed two more goals! Scoring in the 3rd were Jennelle Smeltzer with her second of the game, assisted by Kelsey Mighton, and Jaymee Nolan with Emma Swift and Megan Wilton getting the helpers. Final score 4-1 Lightning!
Great effort by Madison Beishuizen and Leah Herrfort and the whole Lightning team!
On Sunday, the girls travelled to Waterloo to play the Ravens. Trying to keep the momentum rolling, the girls came out playing hard, but went down by a goal as the first ended. With the second underway, the girls tied it up with a goal by Jennelle Smeltzer, Kelsey Mighton assisting. As time ticked down, the Ravens answered back, taking a 2-1 lead. As the 3rd played out, the Ravens scored one more, to end the game with a 3-1 loss for the Lightning.
Solid game by Emma Swift and Hana Solinger, with the entire team playing strong!
