January a Good Month for Lightning Midget AA
Submitted by Scott Biesenthal

The start of 2014 has been very good for the Saugeen Maitland Midget AA.  They have achieved a record of 5 wins and a tie with one game remaining in league play with Chatham. During that span they defeated London (Team 648) 6-0, 2-0, and tied Sarnia at 2, as well as defeating Bluewater 2-0.  They also beat London (Team 611) 4-0.  All 3 forward lines have produced goals, and the 6 defencemen have produced 9 points with each defencemen recording at least 1 point.

They played London (Team 648) in a home and home in early January.  In London, Mel Nolan had the hot hand as she had a hat trick, Tori Terpstra had 2 goals and Lexi Smith rounded out the scoring.  Assists were picked up by Nolan(2), Avery Reeves(3), Smith(2) and singles going to Terpstra, Kailyn Soers, Ciara Lark, Jamie Simpson and Nikki Zabel. Back home the following week Ashlee Lawrence and Terpstra did the damage with Neve VanPelt, Cassidy Colhoun and Nolan picking up the helpers.  Goalies Morgan Baker and Rebecca Ropp, played well when called on as they each picked up shutouts.

In Sarnia, the Lady Sting jumped out to a quick lead in the first and it was the second period before the Lightning replied. Both teams exchanged goals in the third and ended 2-2. Goal scorers were Sarah Biesenthal and Terpstra with the loan helper being picked up by Maddie Duncan.  Baker had the duties between the pipes.

Saugeen travelled to Bluewater and hosted London (Team 611) this past weekend.  Goaltenders Ropp and Baker each picked up a goose egg.  In the Bluewater game, Duncan picked up the first goal with the helper coming from her defence partner Jordyn Sholdice. Smith produced the second goal on a setup from Dawn Pletsch.  On Sunday afternoon in Teeswater, London (Team 611) made the trip up highway 4.  After a scoreless first period a strong shift from Kelsey Dixon,Pletch and Biesenthal had London scrambling. The very next shift Lawrence opened the scoring for the Lightning. VanPelt, Reeves and Colhoun would round out the scoring.  Helpers were awarded to Lawrence(2) and Simpson (2).
