Offensively Challenged
The Saugeen Maitland AA Peewees travelled to Detroit this weekend to play in the Bauer Invitational Tournament. While the girls played some of their best defensive play, the weekend could be summed up by Coach Herrfort's comments...."offensively challenged".
The first game was against the Lightnings back home rival, Oakville. The girls played some of their best hockey but unfortunately ended up on the losing side of the close game 2-0.
The second game was against Chicago Young Americans, and the Lightning were what could be best described as lack lustre. However, in the end the squad was able to come away with a tie.
Their third game of the Round Robin portion of the tournament saw the girls play Oshawa. Thanks to being inspired with Coach Herrfort coming down on Saturday to join the girls even though he was under the weather.. they were able to control much of the play outshooting their opponents 2 to 1. Even with controlling the game, they were only able to get one past the Oshawa net minder off of the stick of Maddie Beizhuizen.
This saw the Saugeen Maitland Lightning making it to the quarter-finals once again playing their rival the Oakville Hornets. The game was back and forth action with both teams getting some excellent scoring opportunities. At the end of regulation time, the game was scoreless and went into overtime.
The 4 on 4 overtime quickly went to 4 on 3 overtime with a questionable tripping call against the Lightning. Then halfway through the power play, Oakville's Captain #14 got loose on a breakaway and ended up scoring the game ending goal.
While this ended Saugeen's hopes in this tournament, they return home knowing that they are starting to match league leading Oakville in play and realizing what they have to work on.....scoring! Good job ladies!
