Hard fought victory against London Devilettes (617)
Saugeen Maitland Lightning (SML) Peewee A girls extended their winning streak
on Sunday November 23 in Howick. Following a
shutout win against Strathroy the previous day, the girls took on the London
Devilettes, who were looking for a win.
It was a low scoring but penalty filled game, with each team receiving two penalties in the first period, three for body checking and one for hooking, to London. With the fast, hard-hitting pace set early in the game, the first goal scored by Marissa VanderPloeg, her first of the year, was assisted by Tori Verbeek. The goal furthered SML's drive, however no goals would be scored by either team in the second period. The scoreless period remained physical, with London taking another penalty for elbowing near the end of the period. Six more penalties would be handed out in the third period, four for SML and two for London, as the girls continued their strong intensity of play. Tripping penalties went to Emma Lindsay and Aalia Gade, body contact went to Rylynn Sinclair and a head contact penalty went to Allison Stevenson, as the girls tried to defend their lead. Body contact and head contact penalties went to Sydney Reif and Katherine Heard of London as they attempted to even the score. The game winner would be decided at 5:34 in the last period with a pass from Sydney McAsh to Tori Verbeek, who found the back of the net. This would give SML a 2-1 lead and was ultimately the final score. The girls would look forward to their upcoming game against Stratford midweek, with this game giving the back-to-back wins on home ice.
