Peewee As began battling in a Provincial play down series against Stratford
Aces on Saturday, February 21st on home ice. The winner of this best of 5
series would move on to the Provincial Championship weekend in April. Both
teams were anxious for the win!
Jadyn Williams opened the scoring in the first period at 6:08, assisted by Natalie Fisher, netting a well-placed shot. The team maintained a steady pace to finish the first period ahead by a score of 1-0.
The second period saw the Aces getting frustrated. The Aces took six penalties to the Lightning’s one, subsequently spending nearly the entire period in the penalty box. Their angst was demonstrated by penalties for tripping and interference. The third penalty for high sticking was matched at six minutes, by a penalty for tripping to Lightning's Aalia Gade. A further four minute penalty to the Aces for head contact however, did not see the Lightning strengthen their lead.
The third period displayed a little more strength by the Lightning and a little more control by the Aces. Allison Stevenson would finally advance the Lightning to a more secure lead with a goal at 8:55, with nice team effort demonstrated by Tori Verbeek and Jadyn Williams gathering the assists. The Aces pulled their goalie in a final drive to capitalize, but Tori Verbeek steadily put the puck in the empty net, sealing the win and a shutout for Rose Pande. Final score 3-0.
