Intermediate A, 2016-2017 (Saugeen Maitland Lightning)

Saugeen Maitland Intermediate A won Gold this weekend in Provincials winning the finals 2 -1 against Whitby. Saugeen trailed 1-0 after 2 periods but came back with 2 goals both from Julie Thomson in the third to take their first Provincial title. Saugeen went 5 -1 in the provincials winning the Quarter Finals 1-0 against Mississauga in 2-  10 minute OT periods with Julie Thomson scoring in OT. Saugeen won the semi finals against Guelph 2-1 with Hailey Herman getting the game winning goal to send them to the finals. The SML Intermediate A team played this past weekend in the Guelph Winter Classic and took home GOLD! Saugeen played Kitchener in the finals winning 4 to 0. Saugeen beat Guelph earlier Sunday in the semi's 4-2 to advance to the finals.  With a mixed up line up and short different players all weekend due to exams the girls posted a 4-1-1 record to win the event. Players of the game were Ally Spielmacher, Cassidy Mason,  Haileigh Duplantis,  Hannah Herman,  Jasmine Thompson and Lexi Smith

For the 3rd year in a row Saugeen Maitland Intermediate A's win the Detroit Bauer Tournament. Saugeen won 6 straight games scoring 47 goals and allowing zero goals in the process. Playing short staffed the girls played awesome with D playing forward and Duplantis and Gaynor sharing 6 shut outs in an impressive tournament for the team.  Saugeen won 5 -0 against Omaha in the semi and then beat Steel City Select 4 -0 in the finals out shooting them 38 -12.  Next up is the Guelph tournament December 9th to 11th 

Saugeen played their first tournament of the year and lost the Gold game in a shoot out to the Whitby Wolves. It took nine shooters from both teams to break the tie. Saugeen went undefeated in the round robin and then beat Etobicoke in the semi finals. Saugeen beat Whitby 4-0 in the round robin and held on to a slim 1 goal lead until Whitby tied it with 3 minutes to play in the game. Great start to the year and congrats to Cassidy Mason Team MVP for the tournament.
