Saugeen Maitland Lightning Peewee Thunderstruck Guelph Tournament
On January 7,8,9 2011, the Saugeen Maitland Peewee Lightning Brought home the Gold as they attended the 12th Annual Guelph Thunder Girls Tournament.

On Friday Jan 7/11, The SML met up the the Markham Stoufvilles for our first round in the tournament. As the first period danced in, SML turned up the heat and scored 4 times and allowing one goal to be scored on them. In the second period each team battled and put the puck in the net once. Third period bounced in and no more goals were allowed, making the score 5-2 for Saugeen. Bright and early Saturday morning we met up with the Whitby Wolves. In the first period, SML roared 2 goals in the net. Second period, we pounced on the Wolves with 2 more goals. By the third period, we ate up the compitition making the final score 6-0. Saturday Evening saw us come up against the hosting team- Guelph. The pressure was on and the crowd was thundering. The first period rolled in and saw SML get on the scoreboard, but only a few seconds later Guelph stormed back making the game a tie. In the second period, Guelph took the lead as they rained another goal in our net. The game was on and the teams were battling for the win. In the third period, SML came back and netted a goal but that was short lived as Guelph had the final say in this game taking the win 3-2.

With 2 wins and a loss, this put SML in the Semi-Finals Sunday morning against the Sarnia Stingers. The girls were pumped and ready to take the ice. As these two evenly matched teams played, they gave the crowd an awesome hockey game. Period one and two swept by with not a single goal by either team. The third period arrived and both teams knew they had to win to make it to the final and all players stepped up to the plate. Both goalies were feeling the pressure as the shots were being delivered and they were protecting their house. SML ended up stinging Sarnia as we netted 2 goals in the third, making the score 2-0.

As the Tournament was coming to an end and Saugeen was in the final, we knew we were coming up against some hard compitition as we had to come up against Guelph Thunder again. The stands were full and all were cheering on their team. The Thunder was battling the Lightning but who would win this storm? In the first period, it was a back and forth game, great compititon as all the girls were equally matched. SML was the first to hit the net, but again Guelph battled back hard and evened the score a few seconds later. As the second period whirled past, neither team was able to get anything past the goalies. The battles were getting fast and fierce and ended up that SML got the puck in the net in the third period. Nearing the end of the game, Saugeen played and protected their assets. This lead to their victory taking home the GOLD medals, with a final score of 2-1 over Guelph.

Once again, these girls have played fair, played hard and made the coaches and parents very proud of their achievement. We would also like to thank Guelph for hosting a great tournament as we had a funtastic time.
