Lightning Take Detroit by Storm
The Saugeen Maitland Bantam AA girls started the new year in the win column, defeating the Cambridge Roadrunners in league play and downing three Detroit teams in a cross-border exhibition series.

After a well-deserved break from the ice over Christmas, the Bolts were a little rusty during a rare Thursday night game versus the Roadrunners in Teeswater. Call-up Mel Nolan got things started with a first period goal with assists going to Lexi Smith and Miranda Lantz. Smith then potted one of her own with helpers from Nolan and Lantz. Tori Terpstra finished off the scoring with a shot to the top shelf; Neve VanPelt and Maddie Duncan earned assists. Morgan Baker turned aside all shots to earn the shutout in the 3-0 win.

The Bantam AA Lightning were disappointed to have been excluded from the weekend Guelph tournament. However Coach Lark, wanting to get the team ready for the second half of the season arranged an exhibition series against the best three Bantam age girls teams in Detroit. In a period of less than 24 hours, the short-handed Bolts gutted out wins against Detroit Honey-Baked (4-2), Detroit Little Caesars (3-0) and Detroit Compuware (6-1). Scoring over the weekend were Ashlee Lawrence (4), Lantz (4), Avery Reeves (2), Jessica Dales, Nikki Zabel and Duncan. Assists were earned by Dales (2), Duncan (2), Lantz (2), Smith (2), Jamie Simpson, Ciara Lark, Terpstra, Zabel, Lawrence and VanPelt. Goaltenders Rebecca Ropp and Baker were solid in net all weekend. The Bolts close out the season on the road, but look to finish strong and solidify their playoff position. Follow the Lightning results at www.saugeenmaitlandlightning.com.
