Saugeen Maitland came away with a big win on Saturday in Waterloo winning 1-0 for their 5th straight shut out and 6 wins in a row. The win guaranteed first place for the Lightning team putting them 3 up with one game to play.
Saugeen finished off the regular season on Sunday traveling to Stratford and skated to a 2-2 tie. Saugeen played 233 minutes with out giving up a goal before Stratford broke the streak. Saugeen now plays Sarnia in the first round of LLFHL playoffs.
Game 1: The Lightning stopped in Waterloo Saturday night with a chance to clinch first. Playing with only 3 Defense due to injuries and sick players Saugeen came out hard in the first dominating the Waterloo team. With many chances and out shooting the Waterloo team Saugeen could not get a goal and after 2 periods the game was still tied at 0.
Hailey Herman opened the scoring early in the third with a shot in front of the net assisted by Lisa Mohr and Reagan Kaufman. That was all the scoring Rebecca Ropp needed in recording her 14th shut out of the year. Game MVP went to Rebecca Ropp for her excellent play in net and her 3 D men, Vanessa Hodgins, Becky Bultz and Taylor MacDonald.
Game 2: Saugeen finished off the regular season with a visit to arch rival Stratford on Sunday. Still playing with only 3 D men coach Bill also changed all three lines up. Saugeen opened the scoring late in the second when Reagan Kaufman broke in all alone and beat the Stratford goalie to take a 1 -0 lead into the secord period break.
Stratford tied it up in the third but 2 minutes later the Lightning regained the lead on a goal from Victoria Krulicki in a scramble in front of the net. Reagan Kaufman and Hailey Herman picked up the assists. Stratford again rallied with 4 minutes to play to even the score and the game ended at 2. Emma Bluhm picked up the tie in the Saugeen net.
Game MVP went to Reagan Kaufman for her excellent 2 way play adding to it a goal and assiting
on the other.
Saugeen finishes the regular season in first place and plays Sarnia in LLFHL play downs. Stratford and Saugeen will play a 2 out of 3 series to move on in the Provincial play downs as well.
