Ripley’s Laura Irwin
continued her knack of scoring big goals in big game situations when she scored
the shootout winner in the Championship game of the Whitby Tournament of Heroes
this past weekend. The game winner
gave the Saugeen Maitland Lightning Midget AA their
second tournament win this season. In round robin play, the Lightning started with a 5-1 win versus Kingston. The Clarington Flames beat Saugeen 3-1 to end a 16 game unbeaten streak. The Lightning bounced back with a 4-2 win versus the Whitby Wolves. In the semi final match Saugeen skated away with a 4-1 win versus the Brampton Canadettes. The gold medal game saw the Lightning face the Kingston Wolves. The Wolves battled back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game late in the third. The OT period went scoreless leading to Irwin’s sudden death shootout winner.
Scoring on the weekend were Laura Irwin (4), Hannah Davidson (4), Stacie Vink (3), Dollee Meigs (2), Kelly Gribbons, Lindsay Dales and Sara Gossell. Assists were awarded to Brittany Butcher (4), Davidson (2), Irwin (2), Gribbons (2), Meigs (2), Brittany Hymers, Harley Westman, Kailyn Soers and Georgia Ottewell.
Picking up wins in net were Stephanie Sluys with 3 and Shea Tiley with 1.
