The Saugeen
Maitland Lightning Midget AA won a pair of games on the weekend to finish off a
couple of playoff series. The previous Tuesday, the Stratford Aces
managed a 1-1 tie versus the Lightning to force a fourth game in their
Provincial qualifying series.
Laura Irwin was the only Saugeen player to beat the Aces Goaltender even though Stratford were outshot 39 to 9. On Sunday, the Lightning edged the Aces 2-1 to win the qualifier series with 3 wins and a tie.
On Saturday, the Lightning faced the London Devilettes in the second round of their Lower Lakes playoff series and Saugeen skated away with a tight 2-1 win to advance to the division finals, winning the series 2-0. The previous Thursday, the Lightning beat the visiting London team 4-2 in their opening game.
Goalscorers in this week’s games were Laura Irwin (4), Dollee Meigs (2), Kelly Gribbons, Georgia Ottewell and Hannah Davidson. Assists were awarded to Harley Westman (3), Hailey Herman (2), Brittany Hymers (2), Brittany Butcher (2), Dollee Meigs (2), Georgia Ottewell, Kailyn Soers and Kelly Garrow.
Stephanie Sluys picked up two wins in net stopping 19 of 21 shots while Shea Tiley also picked up a pair of wins stopping 20 out of 23 shots.
The Lightning have advanced to the Provincial Championship tournament to be held in Vaughan on April 13 – 15th and will face the winner of Kitchener and Sarnia in the division finals of the Lower Lakes Playoffs.
